Memorable Manitobans: George Peter Derenchuk (1930-2020)
Educator. Born at Winnipeg in 1930, son of Belarussian immigrants Piotr Derenchuk and Pauline Derenchuk, brother of Peter Derenchuk, he was educated at Daniel McIntyre Collegiate, University of Winnipeg (BA), and University of Manitoba (BEd, MEd). He worked as a physical education teacher and served as the Vice-Principal of Transcona College (?-?) and Principal of Murdoch Mackay Collegiate (1963-1968) and Pierre Radisson Collegiate (1968-?). He was later the Superintendent of the St. Boniface School Division. In later years, he served as Chairperson of the Social Services Advisory Committee of Manitoba and Planning and Research Officer with Manitoba Emergency Measures. He and wife Sylvia Jean Bohonos (1930-2021) had three children, including Grant John Derenchuk (1961-2016). He died at Winnipeg on 18 January 2020.
