Memorable Manitobans: Emily Sumi “Emilie” Denney (1907-1997)

Educator.

Born in Geneva, Switzerland in 1907, daughter of John Sumi (c1875-1951) and Emilie Eugene Sumi (1869-1947), she accompanied her family when they immigrated to Canada around 1912. She attended Normal School in Manitoba and began her career at Badger School (1929), then taught at Roseisle School (1929-1932) prior to becoming Principal of Mossey River School (1932-1933) and Springfield School (1933-1939). She taught at Stonewall Collegiate and Riverbend School for Girls prior to becoming a Lecturer at the University of Manitoba in 1945. She earned her BA degree (1941) from the University of Manitoba and PhD degree (1968) from the University of Chicago. While in Chicago, she met and married Marcus William Denney (1906-1989). Returning to Manitoba, she retired as an Associate Professor in the French Department at the University of Manitoba, in 1974. She died at the Grace Hospital on 12 December 1997 and her cremains were interred in the Brookside Cemetery.
