Memorable Manitobans: Rowland Coristine (1865-1950)

Farmer.

Born in Lampton County, Ontario on 29 August 1865, son of John Coristine, he quit school at the age of 17 to managed the family farm while his father worked another farm in Manitoba. In 1886, when his father retired back to the Ontario farm, he took up the 480-acre Manitoba farm situated on Section 17, Township 11, Range 19 near Brandon.

On 13 December 1895, he married Sarah Cumming (1864-1959) at Brandon. They had seven children: Hazel Kathleen Coristine (1894-?, wife of William Gordon Clark), Wilfrid Clarence Cumming Coristine (1896-?), Donald Stewart Coristine (1897-1899), Rebecca Marguer “Rita” Coristine (1899-?, wife of ? Dickson), Rowland Murray Coristine (1901-?), Gladys Leeila Coristine (1903-1982), and Harry Burns Coristine (1905-?). He was a member of the IOOF and United Church.

He died at Brandon on 18 May 1950 and was buried in the Zion Cemetery.
