Memorable Manitobans: Phyllis Marsh Field Cooper (1894-1987)

Artist, writer.

Born at Chicago, Illinois on 22 July 1894, she attended the Chicago Art Institute from age ten to seventeen. In March 1918, she moved to Chaucer Siding, east of Treesbank, with her brother Henry and they worked on the farm of Archibald “Archie” Cooper and Ann B. Cooper (1848-1926).

In May 1918, Henry returned to the USA to enlist in the Navy. In September 1918, she moved to Winnipeg where she taught a juvenile art class at the Winnipeg School of Art. In the autumn of 1920, she became employed with the Winnipeg Insurance Company.

In 1933, she married widow Archibald “Archie” Cooper (1867-1953) and they resided at 475 Elgin Avenue, Winnipeg until his death. She wrote articles for the Winnipeg Tribune and Winnipeg Free Press, was an honorary member of the Winnipeg Sketch Club, and a member of the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir. She moved to Glenboro in October 1955 where she gave piano and art lessons in her home.

She died at a seniors home in Wawanesa in August 1987.
