Memorable Manitobans: Clarence Edward Kennedy Cohoe (1911-1997)

Physician.

Born at Pilot Mound on 30 January 1911, second of three sons of physician Thomas Andrew Cohoe (1879-1939) and Linda Rachel Kennedy (1881-1967), he worked at the local branch of the Bank of Toronto for 12 years (1929-1941). In 1941, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and taught navigation at the No. 1 Air Navigation School near Rivers.

After his military discharge in 1944, he began medical studies in 1945 and spent two summers interning on the British Columbia coast. He graduated in 1951 and married a classmate, Helen Christina Cameron. They moved to Vancouver where three children were born. In 1955, the family returned to Manitoba and he established a general medical practice at Pilot Mound. He was instrumental in the building of Prairie View Lodge, a senior’s residence. He also chaired the Pilot Mound school board and the Rock Lake Health Board. Retirement plans in 1985 were cancelled when his wife died suddenly and he worked until final retirement in October 1989.

He died at Crystal City on 22 November 1997 and was buried in the Greenwood Cemetery.
