Memorable Manitobans: Hyman Norman “Hy” Bernstein (1913-1972)Businessman. Born at Winnipeg on 27 February 1913, son of Abram “Abe” Bernstein (?-1920) and Clara Charach (1893-1978), he attended the University of Manitoba. He worked for his stepfather Pearce Baker’s firm of Baker and Sons for 40 years, eventually serving as its President. He and wife Jacquie (?-2008, later wife of Kenneth Shulman) had a daughter and a son. He was Chairman of the United Jewish Appeal and the Israeli Bond Campaign. An avid golfer, he was President of the Glendale Golf and Country Club (1952) and a board member of the Manitoba Golf Association, responsible for the early development and encouragement of junior golf in Manitoba.
