Born at Winnipeg, son of William Bancroft (c1903-1984) and Stephanie Radewich (c1911-1953), he completed a degree in Architecture from the University of Manitoba (1964) and a Master's degree in Urban Design from the University of Edinburgh (1967). In 1964, he joined the architectural firm of Smith Carter Searle and became an Associate in 1968. He was involved in the design of such Winnipeg buildings as the Liquor Control Commission Head Office and Warehouse, and the Pan-Am Pool.
On 22 May 1965, he married Bonnie Ann Kristine Ruddock (daughter of Albert Sydney Ruddock) at St. Martins-in-the-Field Anglican Church in West Kildonan. They had a daughter, Lisa Christine Bancroft (1966-1967), before separating. He died at Ladysmith, British Columbia on 8 August 2013.
