Memorable Manitobans: James William “Jim” Astwood (1934-2021)

Accountant.

Born at Winnipeg on 23 February 1934, the second of three children of James Clifton Ashwood and Dorothy Helen Martin, he attended Kelvin High School then began working as an accountant. He travelled throughout Canada with Price Waterhouse, primarily in offices at Toronto and Montreal. He became a chartered accountant in 1957.

Returning to Winnipeg, he married Margaret Lynne Bateman in 1961. They subsequently had three children. He served as Commodore of the Winnipeg Canoe Club (1963) and later helped it make the transition to a public golf course. He chaired the flat-water paddling section of the 1967 Pan American Games. He served on the board of Manitoba Opera (President, 1995-1997) and was a committee member of the Manitoba Centennial Corporation.

In 1964, he joined the firm of Parrish and Heimbecker, serving as its Secretary-Treasurer, and remained with the firm until his retirement in 2019. He served as President of the Winnipeg Chapter of the Financial Executives Institute of Canada (1978-1980) and was President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (1991-1992).

He died at Winnipeg on 4 December 2021.
