Memorable Manitobans: Beatrice Rose Ashton (1915-1992)


Born at Winnipeg on 6 May 1915, eldest daughter of Robert Ashton (1892-1976) and Rose Hannah Furness (c1871-1957), she graduated from the University of Manitoba (BA, 1937). She joined the teaching staff of the Winnipeg School Division as Principal of the St. Joseph’s Vocational School (1939-1948), later teaching at elementary schools in Victoria, British Columbia for many years. On 12 July 1969, she married widower John Russell Armer (c1884-1983, formerly married to Jennie May Henderson) at St. Barnabas Church in Chingola, Zambia. The couple, who had no children, later divorced. She died at the Victoria General Hospital in British Columbia on 14 May 1992.
