Memorable Manitobans: Philip Langlois Ashdown (1926-2018)

Business executive, lawyer, judge.

Born at Winnipeg on 2 September 1926, son of Harry Crowson Ashdown and Grace Vincent Langlois (1896-1980), he received BA (1948) and LLB (1952) degrees from the University of Manitoba. After receiving an MBA degree from the Harvard Business School in 1954, he returned to Winnipeg and joined the firm founded by his grandfather, J. H. Ashdown, as Executive Vice-President. He left the business in 1968 and began practicing law with the firm of Richardson and Company. He served as a Judge in the Provincial Court (1973-2001) until retirement in December 2001. He was a member of St. Stephens Broadway United Church and St. Andrew’s River Heights United Church, and served on the boards of the Winnipeg Youth Orchestra and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. He died at Winnipeg on 28 June 2018.
