Memorable Manitobans: James Miller Young (1901-1986)

Municipal official.

Born at Eden on 4 February 1901, son of James Young (1862-1929) and Margarette “Maggie” Ritchey (1862-1941) and brother of Thomas Ritchie Young, he married Verna Mary Osborne (1907-1997) at Winnipeg on 27 October 1930 and they had three children: Patricia M. E. Young (1941-1979, wife of Preston Munroe), James Gerald Young, and Marjorie E. Young. He served as a school trustee for the Eden Consolidated School District and Beautiful Plains School Division for more than 30 years, including 15 years as Board Chairman. He retired and moved to Neepawa in 1967, where he served on the Neepawa Hospital Board. He was the Worshipful Master of the Neepawa Masonic Lodge (1958). His service was commemorated by J. M. Young School in 1970. He died in May 1986 and was buried in the Neepawa Cemetery. An oral recording that he made is held at the S. J. McKee Archives.
