Memorable Manitobans: Stanley Leonard “Stan” Witoski (1928-2009)

Businessman, community activist.

Born on the family farm near Tyndall, one of five children of 21 July 1928 to Katherine Obirek (1900-1983) and Frank Witoski (1894-1954), brother of Thaddeus Edward “Ted” Witoski, he married Carol Sliva in 1953. They lived first in Winnipeg, and in 1963 moved to Beausejour to raise their family of four children. It was there that he became an Imperial Esso agent.

Being an entrepreneur, he always had his hand in different ventures, and was an active volunteer who gave endless hours to his community. In 1996 he received the Eastern Regional Volunteer Award of the Year from the Manitoba Heritage Federation. Stan was the first Grand Knight of the newly formed Knights of Columbus Council. He held executive positions on the Broken-Beau Historical Society and the Over 50 Club. In the few years before he died, he enjoyed participating with Citizens on Patrol.

His greatest passions were fishing and storytelling. He enjoyed cottage life at Nutimik Lake, and spent many hours on the lake.

He died at Winnipeg on 30 May 2009 and was buried in the Saint Mary Roman Catholic Cemetery.
