Memorable Manitobans: Georgie Maud Roberta Wilcox (1889-1970)

Artist.

Born at Winnipeg on 28 August 1889, daughter of Eliza Roberta Jenkins (1863-?) and William Crawford (1873-?), on 30 August 1907 she married husband Howard Buell Wilcox (1889-1973) at Winnipeg and they subsequently had two children: Albert Marvin Wilcox (1909-1985) and Roberta Wilcox (1923-?, wife of J. Philip Rowland and Robert Patterson). The family lived at 9 Middle Gate (c1946) and 276 Hugo Street (c1970).

Her involvement in art began in early life when, at the age of 14, she saw work by Paul Kane and was inspired to paint portraits. By the 1940s, she was an active member of the Winnipeg Sketch Club and was exhibiting works of art in public, specializing in watercolour or oil urban scenes and landscapes.

She died at her Winnipeg home, 276 Hugo Street, on 10 October 1970.
