Memorable Manitobans: W. G. “Gib” White (c1859-1922)

Merchant.

He came to Winnipeg in the early 1880s and founded the firm of White and Manahan. He had three children: Eva White, John White, and J. P. White. An avid curler, he was a life member of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club and the Manitoba Curling Association. Following the death of William Whyte, who had donated the prizes for the veterans’ competition at the annual bonspiel, White continued the sponsorship, which became known as the W. G. White Cup competition. He died at Los Angeles, California on 3 March 1922 and was buried in Elmwood Cemetery.
