Memorable Manitobans: William “Bill” Werbeniuk (1924-2011)

Civil servant, community activist.

Born in western Ukraine on 13 October 1924, he emigrated to Canada in 1951 and began working at the St. Boniface General Hospital. He received a BA in Political Science degree from the University of Manitoba then BA and MA degrees in Social Work.

He worked successively for the People's Opportunity Services (1968-1981), Executive Director of Regional Operations (1981-?), and Senior Mental Health Office (?-?) with the Manitoba Department of Health. He retired early to become more active with Manitoba's Ukrainian community, serving as Executive Director for the Ukrainian Canadian Congress until retirement in 1993. He was a member of the boards for many Ukrainian organizations, including the Holy Family Home, Progress Vera Credit Union, Ukrainian Canadian Professional and Business Federation, Canadian Foundation for Ukrainian Studies, Ukrainian Professional and Business Club of Winnipeg, and the Osvita Foundation. He was also a board member of the Vanier Institute-Canadian Family, Sanatorium Board of Manitoba, Oseredok, and Seven Oaks General Hospital.

On 18 September 1952, he married Vera Rizniak and they had two sons and a daughter. He was a member of St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church and later Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church.

He died at Winnipeg on 20 January 2011.
