Memorable Manitobans: Frans Johannes Visscher (1929-2014)

Artist.

Born at Kruingingen, The Netherlands on 27 October 1929, son of Leunje and Wouter Visscher, he lived on the family's orchard and, after the Second World War, he attended horticultural school before coming to Canada in 1953. He studied science at the University of Manitoba then worked as a laboratory technician. He studied at the Winnipeg School of Art after which he worked as an artist. Around 1966, he married fellow artist Esther Warkov and they had a daughter before divorcing. He died at Winnipeg on 20 February 2014 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
