Memorable Manitobans: Margaret Peters Morse “Madge” Tupper (1887-1971)

Community activist.

Born at Shelburne, Nova Scotia on 3 March 1887, eldest of three children of Susanne Peters (1862-?) and physician Charles Morse (1860-?), she moved to Ottawa, Ontario as a child. On 17 December 1910, she married lawyer Charles Stewart Tupper at Ottawa and, after a move to Manitoba, they had a daughter, Margot Stewart Tupper (1928-1999).

On arrival in Winnipeg, she became active in the local arts community, being a performer and director of the Winnipeg Little Theatre. She founded the Winnipeg Player’s Guild and helped to establish the Dominion Drama Festival. In 1949, she led the incorporation of the Winnipeg Ballet and served on its first Board of Directors (1949-1957). In 1953, she was instrumental in getting it Royal patronage to become the Royal Winnipeg Ballet.

She died at Winnipeg on 1 March 1971 and was buried in the St. John's Cathedral Cemetery. Her honorary pallbearers were Alexander Adams, Samuel Freedman. Dr. N. D. McCreath, James Tupper, George Waight, Gurney Evans, Philip Alfred Chester, Harold James Riley, and Dr. Donna Patton. A collection of her correspondence is held at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet Archives.
