Memorable Manitobans: Tom Tredwell (1896-1964)

Musician, businessman.

Born at Worcester, England in 1896, he came to Winnipeg in 1911 and was active in the city’s music community for about 40 years. He started in the music business in 1926 and was associated with the Winnipeg Piano Company from 1928 to 1936. He moved to London, Ontario for two years (1936-1938) where he was organist and choirmaster of an Anglican church.

He returned to Winnipeg in 1938 and was manager of the Western Music Company on Donald Street for 18 years. He opened his own Tredwell’s Music Centre in 1956 and operated it until poor health forced his retirement in 1960. Through his mail-order business, he became widely known across Canada. His wife carried on the business for several years after his retirement.

On 30 July 1927, he married Sarah Nelson Scott (?-1987) at Winnipeg. They had no children. He was the organist of St. Patrick’s Anglican Church for 30 years and also served as choirmaster for two years before his retirement in 1949. He was a member of the Men’s Music Club for many years and was active in the Manitoba Music Competition Festival.

He died at Winnipeg on 30 December 1924 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
