Memorable Manitobans: Mary Smiley Swindlehurst (1907-1992)

Born at Smiley, Saskatchewan in December 1907, daughter of Ernest and Hetty Smiley, she married Mark Swindlehurst (?-1991) in April 1928 and moved soon after to Winnipeg where her husband was a police constable in East Kildonan. She was a member of the Rossmere Country Club and, in 1972, a team that she coached won the Canadian Girls Curling Championship, for which they were inducted into the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt. She died at Winnipeg on 27 March 1992 and was buried at Smiley, Saskatchewan.
