Memorable Manitobans: Richard Carlton Stovel (1921-2012)

Military commander.

Born at Winnipeg on 31 March 1921, son of Ewart Carlton Stovel and Pearl Elizabeth Chisholm (1889-1986), he attended St. John's Ravenscourt School and the University of Manitoba. He enlisted in the Canadian Army Forces in 1940 and, after working for a brief period in the family business Stovel Printing, he rejoined the military, serving more than 36 years in the Royal Canadian Air Force and Canadian Forces, retiring in 1976 as Lieutenant General Deputy Commander-in-Chief of NORAD in Colorado. He died at Winnipeg on 12 June 2012.
