Memorable Manitobans: Judy Louise Storey (1946-2007)

Home economist, radio and television host.

Born at Winnipeg on 27 March 1946 to Olive Gertrude Cregreen (1920-1999) and Haaken Almrud (1905-1956), she attended the University of Manitoba and graduated in Home Economics. While there she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. In 1969, she married Keith Storey, and after residing for two years in Montreal and Toronto, she returned with her husband to Winnipeg, where they went on to have two children.

While staying at home to care for her children, she was able to take on a variety of contract and part time work as a home economist. Eventually she was recruited into the Marketing Branch of the Department of Agriculture, where she continued until the time of her death. As a part of that job, she took on a role on Saturday-morning CBC radio promoting Manitoba food products. From 1990 to 1992, she also served as the host of CTV’s Great Tastes of Manitoba, a Saturday afternoon program that features recipes and cooking. Her passions revolved around food, cooking for family and friends, and, in later years, going on travel adventures with her husband.

She died at Winnipeg on 26 December 2007 and was buried in the St. Vital Cemetery. A fund was established in her memory at The Winnipeg Foundation, by the Manitoba Food Processors Association, with the support of her husband and family. A $1000 scholarship is provided to a student at Red River College who is pursuing a career in the field of Hospitality and Culinary Arts.
