Memorable Manitobans: Melvin “Mel” Solar (1930-2010)

Educator.

Born at Sifton on 25 September 1930, son of Wasyl “William” Solar (1893-1974) and Katherine Hryhirchuk (1902-1992), he earned BA, BEd, MEd degrees and became a teacher. He worked at Dublin Bay School (?-?), Sifton School (?-?), Dauphin, and Winnipeg, where he worked in the River East School Division, including service as the Principal of Springfield Heights School and John Henderson Junior High School (1970-1990). On 22 May 1954, he married high school sweetheart Elsie Genik and had two sons. An outdoorsman, his hobbies included fishing, hunting, and boating. He died at the St. Boniface Hospital on 6 May 2010.
