Memorable Manitobans: Thorbjorg Sigurdsson (1872-1971)
Born at Borgarfirdi, Iceland in 1872, daughter of ? Jonsson, she came to Canada in 1878 and settled in the Icelandic settlement of New Iceland. On 15 August 1893, she married Johannes Sigurdsson (?-1924) at Winnipeg and they had four children: Valgerdur Sigri “Loa” Sigurdsson (1896-1966), Larus Arthur Sigurdsson (1899-1986), Stefania Sigurdsson (1901-1991), and Jon Johannes Sigurdsson (1908-1962).
She was the first President of Sigurvon, the first suffragist organization in Manitoba, as well as first Regent of the children's lodge of the IOGT at Gimli, an honorary member of the Ladies Aid of the Arborg Federated Church, and an honorary member of the Arborg Chapter of the Icelandic National League.
She died at her Winnipeg home, 492 Dominion Street, on 25 June 1971 and was buried in the Hnausa Cemetery.
