Born at Sylvan on 15 July 1915 to Sophia Hrycenko (1865-1962) and Michal Szewczyk (1879-?), he was educated in Winnipeg and developed diverse interests. He studied painting with Lionel Lemoine FitzGerald at the Winnipeg School of Art and worked for a number of years as a commercial artist.

He earned a Science degree at the University of Manitoba and studied Entomology at the Morden Research and Development Centre until the war years. During the Second World War, he served in the Royal Canadian Navy (1944-1945), stationed in Halifax and Bermuda. After the war, he studied Medicine at the Manitoba Medical College and graduated with the class of 1950. He trained in General Surgery in Winnipeg and Montreal and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada in 1960.

In 1950, he married his medical school classmate, Elizabeth Malyska (1926-2022), and together they built a medical practice in north Winnipeg, serving the community from 1950 to 1987. He was known as being energetic and dedicated to his profession, and inspired others with his generosity of spirit. He was a founding member of the Victoria General Hospital and served as the first President of its medical staff. He was also a founding member and President of the North Winnipeg Rotary Club and the North Winnipeg YMCA, served as Treasurer of the Manitoba Medical Association and President of the Association of General Practitioners of Manitoba. He enjoyed membership in the Sons of Ukrainian Pioneers, affectionately known as “The S.O.U.P. Club.”

He and his wife raised six children, five of whom went on to enter the medical profession. In his spare time, he pursued his passion for gardening and his collection of rose varieties.

He died at Winnipeg on 18 September 2007 and was buried in the Glen Eden Memorial Gardens.
