Memorable Manitobans: Alice Edith Lucy Saunders (1906-1972)

Educator.

Born at London, England on 24 April 1906, daughter of Lucy Eleanor Burden (1872-1965) and Robert Edward Saunders (1873-1954), she immigrated to Canada in 1917 and became a teacher. Within Manitoba, she taught at Crandall School (1929) and was Principal of North Springfield School (1935) and Green Ridge School (1936). By the early 1950s, she gained employment as a secretary, working in that role for 21 years, including for the Vancouver Housing Association. By the 1960s, she had moved to Vancouver, British Columbia where, on 16 November 1972, she died enroute to St. Pauls Hospital. Her cremains were interred in the Mountain View Cemetery.
