Memorable Manitobans: Walter Edwin Rooke (1882-1958)
Born at Wolverton, Buckinghamshire, England on 14 March 1882, son of Rose Stronell and Walter James Rooke, he came to Canada in 1904 and worked as a building contractor specializing in apartment blocks. He moved to British Columbia in 1947 and retired in 1955. On 28 September 1910, he married Margaret Wallace Wilson (1887-1972) at Winnipeg and they had three children: Marguerite Edwina Rooke (1911-?, wife of Cyril Scott Thompson), Wallace James Rooke (1914-?), and John Wilfred Rooke (1917-?). He was a member of the Manitoba Lawn Bowling Association (President, 1943). He died at West Vancouver, British Columbia on 6 November 1958. Some of his construction works in Manitoba included:
