Memorable Manitobans: Maurice “Mo” Renaud (1929-2024)

Business manager, sports announcer.

Born at Winnipeg on 25 December 1929, one of four sons of Joseph Renaud and Violet George, he attended St. James Collegiate where he played lacrosse with the Border Athletic Club. After training as an engineering aide, he worked for the Manitoba Telephone System and was later the General Sales Manager for the Greater Winnipeg Gas Company. For 18 years starting in 1975, he was the General Manager for the Red River Exhibition. He was Executive Director of Winnipeg's centennial celebrations in 1974 and announced the game play of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1962-1997).

On 3 July 1954, he married Irene Catherine Rebiffe at Winnipeg and they subsequently had three sons. He served as a referee and press officer for Lacrosse Manitoba. He was President of the St. Vital Bulldogs Senior Football Club in the late 1960s and President of the St. Boniface Football Association in the 1970s. For the former, he was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame (2007). He was also inducted into the Manitoba Football Hall of Fame (2018) and Manitoba Lacrosse Hall of Fame (2018).

He died at Winnipeg on 14 November 2024.
