Memorable Manitobans: Arnold Aubrey Portigal (1928-2015)

Entrepreneur, philanthropist.

Born at Winnipeg on 9 March 1928, only child of Samuel and Genevieve Portigal, he operated a financial services business then a real estate firm. Active in the Jewish community, he fundraised on behalf of Russian Jews fleeing to Israel. He served as Chairman of the Board for the Victoria General Hospital and Chairman of the Manitoba Cancer Treatment and Research Foundation. He received a City of Winnipeg Community Service Award (1974). He later moved to Phoenix, Arizona where he was National Treasurer of the American Cancer Foundation until 2002. He died on 4 January 2015.
