Memorable Manitobans: Michael Stephen Pohorecky (1899-1964)

Born at Hadynkiwitz, Ukraine in 1899, during the First World War he served in the Ukrainian armed forces and was demobilized after four years of service with the rank of Lieutenant. He attended Ukrainian universities and received a degree of Philosophy. He came to Canada in 1927.

He was editor and publisher of Rebirth Monthly magazine since 1929 and editor of the Ukrainian Western News at Edmonton, Alberta. He founded the New Pathway newspaper in 1930 and was its Editor-in-Chief for 34 years. He was coordinator of the Ukrainain Canadian Committee, President of the Ukrainian National Federation of Canada, Vice-President of the Ukrainian War Veterans War Association, President of the Kalyna Co-op, and an executive member of the Canadian Press Club, Winnipeg Press Club, and Ukrainian Culture and Educational Centre.

He and wife Amelia Diachok (1905-1982) had six children: Zenon Pohorecky, Roman Pohorecky (1929-1976), Orest Alexander Pohorecky (?-1998), Eugenia Nadia Pohorecky (1933-2014, wife of Vernon Johnson), Natalia Vera Pohorecky (?-1996), and Irene Pohorecky. The family lived at 329 Polson Avenue.

He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 26 July 1964 and was buried in the All Saints Cemetery.
