Memorable Manitobans: George W. Phelps (1882-?)Merchant. Born at Brantford, Ontario on 4 May 1882, son of Epharas Lord Phelps and Elizabeth Devlin, he attended public school at Mount Pleasant, quitting at the age of 14 to work in a store, later coming to Manitoba and working for two years as a saleman at a store in Boissevain. He the moved to Minnedosa to work in a store there until 1905 when he opened a general store of his own. On 6 July 1907, he married Ida Swinbank at Minnedosa. They had two children: William Phelps and Olive K. Phelps. He was a member of the IOOF, the Knights of Pythias, the Yeomen of America, and the Methodist Church. Sources:The Story of Manitoba by F. H.
