Memorable Manitobans: Elisabeth Dyck Peters (1915-2011)

Educator.

Born at Grigorewka, Russia on 13 November 1915, daughter of Katherina Funk and Dietrich Dyck, she came to Canada with her mother and siblings in 1925, her father having been killed in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution.

On 27 June 1942, she married Victor John Peters at Winnipeg and they subsequently had a daughter and a son. She obtained a teaching certificate followed by BA and MA degrees then embarked on a long teaching career, including at Horndean School (1947-1954), later moving to Winnipeg where she was a founder of what is now Westgate Mennonite Collegiate.

She was later a Professor at the University of Manitoba. She advocated for German language programs in Manitoba schools, she wrote and staged plays, and was a long-time contributor to Mennonite publications in English and German.

She died at Winnipeg on 16 May 2011 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
