Memorable Manitobans: Gustav Ewert [Gustave Ewart] Penner (1884-1971)

Educator.

Born in the United States on 10 January 1884, son of John W. Penner (1853-1941) and Elizabeth J. Ewert (1857-1937), he became an educator and arrived in Manitoba around 1902, completing his naturalization in 1908. He taught at Edenburg School (1908-1911), Altona School (1919-1921, Principal), Winkler School (1924-1927), Kronsgart School (1927-1929), and Edward School (1929-1930), and likely taught near Plum Coulee (c1910s, c1916) and Morris (c1920s).

In 1909, he married Helena Unger (1885-1967) and they had eight children: Hilda Penner (1910-2000, wife of A. J. Friesen), Ella Penner (1911-2000, wife of H. J. Peters), Leonard Unger Penner (1913-2002), Hugo Penner (1914-?), Walter G. Penner (1916-1994), John William Penner (1918-1987), Edna Helen Penner (1921-1999, wife of H. J. Kasper), and Harold Unger Penner (1923-2015). In retirement, he lived at 165 Ninth Street, and later at Salem Home, in Winkler.

He died at Salem Home on 6 December 1971 and was buried in the Winkler Cemetery.
