Memorable Manitobans: John Dempster “Jack” Parrington (1933-2024)

Athlete, educator.

Born at Winnipeg on 24 October 1933, son of Christine S. Parrington (?-1970) and Clarence Alfred Parrington (c1903-1985), his childhood was spent at Toronto, Ontario where he interest in sports was developed. He received a sports scholarship to the University of Houston where he tied the world record for the 100 metres, on 21 July 1956, and competed in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. He returned to Winnipeg where he was a teacher, physical education supervisor, and Vice-Principal at Dieppe School (1980) in the Assiniboine South School Division. He was a founder, in 1979, of the Assiniboia Optimist Track Club. In 1962, he married Maureen Foster at Orillia, Ontario and they had three children. He died at his Winnipeg home on 5 March 2024.
