Memorable Manitobans: Winston Ewart “Wynn” Norton (?-2011)

Lawyer, judge.

Born at Deloraine, he was raised on the family farm. After graduation from high school, he worked in Winnipeg at McDonald Brothers Aircraft before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941, where he served until October 1945. After his discharge, he attended the United College for two years then entered the Manitoba Law School in 1948, graduating in 1951 and was called to the Manitoba Bar later that year. He worked in business at Brandon from 1951 to 1953 then returned to Winnipeg to practice in the field of litigation and labour law as a partner in the firm of Fillmore, Riley, McLachlan, Norton & Yarnell. He was made a Queen’s Counsel in 1962 and served as a Bencher for the Law Society of Manitoba (1968-1971). He was Chairman of the Easter Seal Campaign in 1960 and, in his early years, he was active in the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Kinsmen Club, and Gyro Club. From 1960 to 1970, he served as Aide-de-Camp to Lieutenant-Governors Errick Willis and Richard Bowles. He served as as a Provincial Court Judge from 1980 until his retirement in 2003. In recognition of his community service, he was given a Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002. He died at Winnipeg on 8 April 2011.
