Memorable Manitobans: Anna Nicol (1865-1927)

Educator.

Born in Ontario on 28 June 1865, she moved to Brandon where she taught at the Old Central School (1883-1886). She then moved to Winnipeg where she was the first Principal of Machray School (1886-1891). She resigned in early March 1891 and, on 16 March 1891, married railway freight agent John Robinson Dutton at Brandon.

They subsequently had eight children: Thomas Harnott “Tom” Dutton (1892-1960), Agnes Nicol Dutton (1893-1919, wife of William Thomas Girom Wiener), Edward Millican Dutton, Andrew Chester Dutton (1896-1897), Richard Wilson Dutton (1898-1971), Mary Robinson Dutton (1899-1978), Esther Routledge Dutton (1902-1969, wife of Mr. Carlson), and Dorothy Harnott Dutton (1909-1996).

In February 1922, she was acclaimed to the Manitoba Minister of Agriculture’s advisory board as Women’s Institute northern representative.

She died at Gilbert Plains on 18 April 1927 and was buried in the Eldon Cemetery.
