Memorable Manitobans: Paul Gustav Morton (1938-2024)

Media executive.

Born at Winnipeg on 29 May 1938, son of Henry Albert Morton and Eva Rebecca “Beck” Ginsberg (c1897-1985), he received BA (?) and Law (1962) degrees from the University of Manitoba. He then took control of the Odeon-Morton Theatre Company founded by his late father. In the 1970s, he partnered with Israel Harold “Izzy” Asper to establish Canadian television station CKND after obtaining a broadcast license from the CRTC and purchasing an American station. He joined in forming the Global Television Network and, in 1977, he became its President. On 1 June 1961, he married Karen Marilyn “Karsie” Oreck at the Shaarey Zedek Synagogue and they had three children. He served as President of the Winnipeg Football Club (1974-1975). He died at Toronto, Ontario on 17 January 2024 and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
