Memorable Manitobans: George Joseph Morrissette (c1938-2016)

Poet, storyteller, fiddler.

Born in St. Boniface around 1938, adopted only child of Alfred Morrissette (?-?) and Aurore Lavallee (1905-1967), he received a BFA degree from the University of Manitoba and an MFA from Herbert H. Lehman College in New York (c1967). He worked as a schoolteacher, art salesman, literary translator, playwright, youth worker, and taxi driver. His poetry publications included Prairie Howl (1977), Up Against the Open Sky (1979), Finding Mom at Eaton's (1981), and Michif Cantos (2001) and his writing was included in the anthology Manitowapow (2012). He died at Winnipeg on 21 July 2016.
