Memorable Manitobans: Randolph Martin “Randy” Minuk (1954-2012)

Lawyer.

Born at Winnipeg on 20 August 1954 to Lola Fashier (1931-1983) and Bert Minuk (1928-?), he graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Law Degree in 1977, and was called to the Manitoba Bar in 1978. Shortly thereafter, he opened his own law practice, Minuk Law, as a criminal defence lawyer.

He earned a reputation as a lawyer who fought hard for his clients, treated them with respect and compassion, and saw the importance of mentoring young lawyers. His colleagues and clients recognized him by his signature pony tail and silver brief case. Joined by his wife Linda, he expanded his law practice by forming Minuk Law Partners. Meanwhile, he was active in the community as a board member of the Rady Jewish Community Centre, a committee member of the Rady JCC’s Annual Y Sports Dinner, and for several years a volunteer at Shalom Square at Winnipeg’s Folklorama.

His passion for law extended beyond work. He enjoyed television shows based on court room drama and discussing hot-button legal issues. He was deeply concerned about people's legal and human rights in and outside of the court room. He also enjoyed spending summers with family at the cottage at Gimli. An avid runner, he was commonly seen running through the streets of Loni Beach, Gimli, or on Wellington Crescent, or with his many friends at the Rady Centre. He and the family often took winter vacations in Florida.

With his wife Linda Malko, whom he married in 1989, he had two children.

He died at Winnipeg on 10 August 2012 and was buried in the Rosh Pina Memorial Gardens. To honour his work, the Randy Minuk Memorial Bursary was established in 2014 at the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Law to support students interested in pursuing Criminal Law.
