Memorable Manitobans: Stewart Congdon Millett (1925-1984)

Community activist.

Born at Dartmouth, Nova Scotia on 1 May 1925, son of Rupert Murray Millett (1893-1983) and Ruth Congdon (1893-1972), he came to St. James in 1950 and operated an insurance agency. He served as President of the Kinsmen Club of Winnipeg (1957), President of the Red River Exhibition Association (1959-1961), and provincial Chair of the Easter Seals campaign (1965). He was a Progressive Conservative candidate in the Assiniboia constituency in the 1966 provincial general election but was defeated by Stephen Clifford Patrick.

In 1946, he married Marion “Marnie” (1927-2014) and they had four children: Margery Jean Millett (wife of Stephen Andrew Bannatyne), Sue Ann Millett (wife of Gerald Stephen John Maciejko), Elizabeth Marion “Beth” Millett (wife of Wolfgang Kaminski), and Clinton “Clint” Millett. The family lived at 43 Haliburton Bay (1974). He died at La Jolla, California on 18 December 1984 and was buried in the Old Baptist Burial Ground at Chester, Nova Scotia.
