Memorable Manitobans: Thomas Hatton Metcalfe (1839-1921)Farmer, businessman, municipal official. He came to Manitoba with his family in 1876 and settled on a farm near Oakland. He moved to Portage la Prairie in 1889 where he took over the management of the Farmers’ Elevator. He later operated an oatmeal mill and founded the Metcalfe Milling Company. He served as Reeve of the Rural Municipality of Portage la Prairie in 1888. He and wife Eliza Hatton (1839-1921) had four sons: William Edward Metcalfe, Charles Metcalfe, Geroge Albert Metcalfe, and Thomas Llewellyn Metcalfe. He died at Portage la Prairie on 26 January 1921.
