Born in Yorkshire, England on 26 February 1867, he came with his family to Canada in 1904 and settled at Winnipeg where he worked as a building contractor. He and wife Agnes Walker (1864-1936) had three children: Ellen Metcalfe (1888-1972, wife of D. E. L. Fisher), Mary Madge Metcalfe (1891-1944), Eric Metcalfe (1903-?). He was a member of the Sons of England the Yorkshire Society. He moved to Vancouver, British Columbia around 1927 and died there on 30 July 1947.
