Memorable Manitobans: Andrew A. Merritt (1872-1977)


Born near Smithville, Ontario on 5 November 1872, he taught school in Ontario before coming to Winnipeg in 1909. He was the Principal of Cecil Rhodes School (1914-1919) and later Wawanesa School (1923-1925). After leaving the teaching profession, he worked at Great West Permanent Loan Company, Imperial Canadian Trust Company, and Ogilvie Flour Mills Company. The last 18 years of his working life were spent as an accountant at the Marlborough Hotel, from which he retired in 1945.

On 6 January 1897, he married Marilda Grace Lampman (c1878-1963) at Lincoln, Ontario. They had twelve children including Edison Gordon Merritt (b 1898), Clifford Addeson Merritt (b 1899), Wallace Alanson Merritt (b 1900), Russell Andrew Merritt (b 1902), Grace Marian Merritt (b 1905, wife of George Lambert), Harold Leonard Merritt (b 1907), Gladys Irene Merritt (b 1908, wife of Lloyd White), Edith Merritt (b 1913, wife of Jack Scarfe), Florence Merritt (wife of Tom Kirkham), Doris Merritt (wife of Jack Ballentine), Mildred Merritt (wife of John Watson).

He died at Winnipeg in March 1977 and was buried in the Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery.
