Memorable Manitobans: Frederick Gallagher “Fred” McGuinness (1891-1968)

Physician.

Born at Ottawa, Ontario on 25 October 1891, son of Frederick Anthony McGuinness (1858-1933) and Charlotte Gallagher McGuinness (1861-1948), uncle of Frederick George “Fred” McGuinness, in 1900 he moved to Brandon with his family and graduated from the Manitoba Medical College in 1917. He then enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force and went overseas with the Canadian Army Medical Corps, serving as a medical officer with the Ninth Royal Irish Fusiliers.

Following his military discharge, he received postgraduate training at the Rotunda Hospital Dublin and the Royal Maternity and Women’s Hospital at Glasgow. He practiced in Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Winnipeg General Hospital. He taught at the Manitoba Medical College from 1923 to 1946 when the Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology merged and he became Professor and Director of the new department. He served as President of the Winnipeg Medical Society, Manitoba Medical Association (1935-1936), Canadian Medical Association, and Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada.

On 12 September 1922, he married Myrtle Eva White (1898-1996) and they had two children: Jim McGuinness and Elizabeth “Betty” McGuinness (wife of ? Shannon).

He died at the Deer Lodge Hospital on 21 May 1968 and was buried in the Elmwood Cemetery.
