Memorable Manitobans: Thomas Gerald McCarthy (1903-1990)


Born at Portage la Prairie on 13 March 1903, son of Thomas McCarthy (1867-?) and Jane Morgan (1867-?), he graduated from the University of Toronto in 1926 and the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba. He had a dental practice in Winnipeg for 62 years until retirement in 1988. Active in the community, he was a member of the Winnipeg Executives Association, Granite Curling Club, Niakwa Country Club, Manitoba Club, Fellowship Club, American Institute of Oral Biology, and Canadian Dental Association. He was inducted into the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt “in recognition of 50 years of devoted service to the Marymound School and the Sisters of the Good Shepherd.” He also received the City of Winnipeg Community Service Award. He died at the Misericordia Hospital on 29 November 1990 and was buried in the Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery.
