Memorable Manitobans: Henry William “Harry” Manning (1889-1980)
Born at Toronto, Ontario on 23 November 1889, son of Thomas Albert Manning and Jane Maria Furnell, on 12 October 1908 he married Beatrix Wakefield Martin (1892-1969) at Toronto and they had a son, H. W. Barry Manning. He was working as an advertising manager when, in May 1918, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, serving as a Gunner in the 2nd Artillery Depot until demobilization in December. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1931 when he began working for the Great West Life Assurance Company, holding the positions of Assistant General Manager (1931-1938) and General Manager (1938-1955), retiring in 1955 as Vice-President and Managing Director. He continued as a director until 1967. He died at the Health Sciences Centre on 8 March 1980 and was buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery at Toronto.
