Memorable Manitobans: Stewart Myles “Stew” MacPherson (1908-1995)

Broadcaster.

Born at Winnipeg on 29 October 1908, son of Darnel MacPherson and Agnes Cuthbert, he was raised on Victor Street. In 1936, he left a job as an undertaker’s assistant to travel to London, where he refereed hockey.

During the Second World War he became the BBC’s “voice from the air,” covering the air war, and in 1942 won a listeners’ poll as British Male Voice of the Year. After the war he worked for station WCCO in Minneapolis, then for the Winnipeg Enterprises Corporation before joining CJAY (CKY-TV). He was a colour commentator for the early Winnipeg Jets hockey broadcasts. He was inducted into the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame (1986), Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt (1987), and Canadian Broadcasters Hall of Fame. He received a City of Winnipeg Community Service Award (1971).

On 28 April 1937, he married Emily Violet Comfort (1908-1972) at Wembley, England and they subsequently had two children.

He died at Winnipeg on 16 April 1995.
