Memorable Manitobans: Stewart MacPherson (1907-1996)

Broadcaster.

Born in Winnipeg, he was raised on Victor Street. He left a job as an undertaker’s assistant in 1936 to travel to London, where he refereed hockey. During World War Two he became the BBC’s “voice from the air,” covering the air war, and in 1942 won a listeners’ poll as British Male Voice of the Year. After the war he worked for station WCCO in Minneapolis, then for Winnipeg Enterprises before joining CJAY (CKY-TV). He was a colour commentator for the early Winnipeg Jets hockey broadcasts.

In 1987, he was inducted into the Manitoba Order of the Buffalo Hunt.
