Memorable Manitobans: John Neil Maclean (1870-1942)

Cleric, editor, civil servant.

Born in Brock Township, Ontario on 1 January 1870, son of Neil Alexander McLean (1812-1890) and Janet Gillis (1840-1890), he was educated at the Woodstock College where he won gold medals for public speaking in his graduation year.

Ordained as a minister, he came to Winnipeg in 1907 and preached there for eight years. He was editor of The Western Outlook (1910-1915), Superintendent of Baptist Missions (1911-1915), Secretary of Social Service (1915-1916), and Editor of the Statesman for several years. In 1916, he organized a temperance campaign. As of 1925, was the Chief License Inspector for the Manitoba Temperance Act.

He was married twice, first on 24 Septembre 1903 to nurse Martha Washington Redfern (1873-1916) at Toronto, Ontario with whom he had two sons: Neil Redfern Maclean (c1907-?) and John Tenbroeke Maclean (1910-1968). In 1918, he married Nan MacQueen (c1882-?). The family lived at 336 St. John’s Avenue in Winnipeg (c1925). His recreations included golf, motoring, and gardening. He had a summer home at Matlock on Lake Winnipeg.

He died in 1942 at Manilla, Ontario and was buried in the Scotch Cemetery at Brock, Ontario.
