Memorable Manitobans: Samuel Neish MacKay (1880-1960)

Hotelier.

Born at Liverpool, England on 4 January 1880, son of John and Emma MacKay, he came to Canada in 1886 and was educated at the public schools of Montreal, Quebec. He moved to Manitoba in 1894 and became the proprietor of the Mariaggi Hotel in 1904. He was involved in real estate and insurance transactions as of 1906 and operated a hotel at Wolseley, Saskatchewan.

He was a member of the 90th Winnipeg Rifles militia. On 15 September 1915, he enlisted with the 79th Battalion and transferred to the 107th Battalion on 22 December 1915. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 August 1916 and transferred to the 197th Battalion. He served in England.

He and wife Mary Sullivan (1887-1945) had a son, Samuel Glen MacKay (1909-1962). The family lived in Apt. 10 - Bell Rose Apartments in Winnipeg. At the time of his death, he lived at 36 Roslyn Road. He died at the Winnipeg General Hospital on 16 May 1960 and was buried in the Brookside Cemetery.
