Memorable Manitobans: Frank John Lone (1922-2006)

Physician, pathologist.

Born at Winnipeg on 7 April 1922 to Helen Bytnar (1896-1969) and Jan “John” Lon (1887-1974), he graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1945 as a Doctor of Medicine. He began his medical career in a general practice in Killarney as the quintessential country doctor. In 1946, he married Isobell “Betts” Mary Barron (1921-2006) and they went on to have three children. In 1956, he began postgraduate work at Winnipeg, and at Sloan Kettering Memorial Hospital for Cancer, New York City, receiving his fellowship in Pathology in 1960.

The family moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario where he assumed the duties of Director Chief Pathologist at both the Port Arthur General and St. Joseph’s Hospitals. He was a consulting Pathologist to the surrounding smaller hospitals. His involvement and contributions to the medical community were many. He was a member of the Ontario Association of Pathologists serving as a board member, secretary, and finally president of the association.

Of his many accomplishments, the one of which he was most proud was the review of the laboratory services in the provinces of Manitoba and Saskatchewan; he made recommendations that underlie many of the current practices. He also took a great deal of interest in the development of Lakehead University, beginning as a board member and eventually becoming the Chairman of the Board for three years. He also lectured in microbiology for two years in the Bachelor of Nursing Program. In retirement, he and his wife lived for a time in Wildwood, Florida, before moving back to Winnipeg.

He died at Winnipeg on 10 May 2006.
