Memorable Manitobans: Caddie Ruth Krindle (1943-2024)

Lawyer, judge.

Born at Winnipeg on 6 February 1943, daughter of Gwendolyn Marion “Gwen” Henderson (1913-1996) and Harold Krindle (1911-1987), she attended schools in the north end, including West Kildonan Collegiate, graduating in 1959. She took two years of Arts at United College then entered the Manitoba Law School, receiving a Law degree and being called to the Manitoba Bar in 1968. She practiced labour law until 1970 when she became a prosecutor for the Province of Manitoba. She was the first woman lawyer in Manitoba to serve as a prosecutor and the first woman lawyer in Manitoba to serve as a Crown attorney. She argued before all levels of courts in Manitoba and the Supreme Court of Canada. In 1976, she was appointed Chair of the Manitoba Labour Board. She returned to private practice in 1977 and chaired private labour arbitration tribunals.

She was appointed a judge in the County Court of Winnipeg in 1980 and became a Puisne Judge in the Court of Queen's Bench in 1984. She retired in 2002. While on the bench, she was a sessional lecturer in criminal law at the University of Manitoba Law School. She presented courses for the National Judicial Institute and the Canadian Judicial Council. After her retirement, she was appointed Arbitrator under the Northern Flood Agreement and was involved in resolving Manitoba Residential School claims out of court. She also pursued a Masters degree in Art History and wrote a research paper on St. John's Anglican Cathedral. She served on the Council for FortWhyte Alive.

In recognition of her community service, she received a Distinguished Service Award from the Manitoba Bar Association (2000) and a Hero Award from the Canadian Bar Association Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Conference (2002). She received an honorary degree from the University of Winnipeg (2007).

She died at Winnipeg on 22 December 2024, survived by her spouse Bev Stacey.
